The History Of Greeting Cards

Sending greeting cards to friends and family is a tradition that goes back about 200 years. They  were mostly sent by the elite and wealthy in the early to mid 1800's.

They were mostly sent by the elite and wealthy in the early to mid 1800's.  Most of the early greeting cards were hand delivered and many were quite expensive, but they soon gained mass popularity with the introduction of the world's first postage stamp issued in 1840.

Valentine cards or tokens are well in evidence in the 18th century but it was not until the 19th century that greetings cards became popular. Scotland has claimed the first greetings card, which was published in 1841 by Charles Drummond of Leith, which shows a fat disembodied face laughing and bears the legend "A Guid New Year An' Mony o' Them."

The first Christmas card was not published until 1843 and this was the inspiration of Henry Cole of Old Bond Street in London. Designed by John Callcot Horsley, it shows a gathering of 11 children, parents and grandparents toasting the health of absent friends. The three youngest members of the family are firmly engaged in demolishing the Christmas pudding.
